Splish, Splash: Tips for Water Adventures with Your Dog

July 3, 2023 | We Care | Administrator

It’s summer! Time for beach trips, lakeside relaxation, and water-filled adventures. But what about your four-legged friend? If you’ve recently welcomed a rescue dog into your family, exploring their comfort level around water can be exciting and nerve-wracking.

The following guide is some of the best ways to keep your dog safe around water, and to ensure a fun experience for you and your furry companion!

Introduce Gradually:

Just like humans, dogs have different comfort levels when it comes to water. Start by introducing your pup to shallow bodies of water, such as a kiddie pool or a calm lake shore. Observe their reactions and body language. If they seem hesitant or anxious, give them time to adjust at their own pace.

Supervision is Key:

Always keep a watchful eye on your dog near water. Even if your furry friend is an excellent swimmer, unforeseen circumstances can arise. Be attentive to any signs of distress, fatigue, or potential hazards in the water, such as strong currents or submerged debris.

Invest in a Dog Life Preserver:

When in doubt, a dog life preserver can be a fantastic investment. Not only does it provide an extra layer of safety, but it also helps your dog stay afloat and visible in case of an emergency. Ensure the life preserver fits your dog snugly but comfortably, allowing them to move freely.

Provide Constant Hydration:

Water play can be exhilarating for dogs, but it’s crucial to keep them hydrated throughout the activity. Bring fresh water and a portable bowl to ensure they have access to hydration whenever needed. Drinking salty or contaminated water can lead to dehydration or illness, so always discourage them from lapping up from natural water sources.

Pool Safety Precautions:

If you have a swimming pool at home, take additional safety precautions. Secure the pool area with a fence or gate to prevent unsupervised access. Consider using a pool alarm system that alerts you to any unexpected pool entries. Remember, not all dogs are natural swimmers, so never assume they can easily navigate a pool.

Rinse and Dry Thoroughly:

After your water adventures, rinse your dog with clean water to remove any chlorine, salt, or other substances that may irritate their skin or coat. Drying them off thoroughly, especially their ears, helps prevent infections. A quick towel dry or a gentle blow-dry session can do the trick.

As you embark on water-filled adventures with your rescue dog, prioritize their safety above all else. Take gradual steps, closely monitor their comfort level, and remember to enjoy the experience together. Whether it’s exploring a calm lake or frolicking in the waves at the beach, by following these tips and employing common-sense precautions, you’ll create lasting memories and keep your furry friend safe around water. Happy splashing!
