It’s National Feed A Rescue Pet Week, 2021: Can You Help?

July 21, 2021 | We Care | Sarah Clarkson

Now in its 5th year, National Feed A Rescue Pet Week is here!  With a goal of feeding millions of rescued and starving animals in need, the Rescue Bank Program and GreaterGood.org are once again joining forces.  This summer, they plan to help even more homeless animals … and they need your help!

DONATED FOOD = FUNDS SAVED

Food is typically the number one need most shelters and rescue organizations have when caring for abandoned, stray, or relinquished dogs.  But getting them safe, off the streets, and then fed sometimes depletes the entire budget of these locally run organizations!  Shelters and rescue groups are then left to scramble to meet the myriad of other needs these desperate animals have.  Sadly and all too often, medical treatments, vaccinations, and participation in adoption programs wind up being underfunded as rescue groups run out of money and resources.

The Rescue Bank’s annual drive is looking to fix that.   By giving thousands of donated meals to rescue organizations, GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank allows shelters to save their money.  Then they can choose to spend it on the other critical needs the animals in their care have.

The Rescue Bank is a signature program of the national non-profit GreaterGood.org.  Its Executive Director, Elizabeth Asher, explains that “by providing consistent and nutritious meals, rescues are able to free up scarce funds for vaccines, spay/neutering and other expenses needed for animal care.”   They are super passionate about helping people who care for animals.

By providing thousands of donated meals to rescue organizations, GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Bank allows shelters to save their money so that they can spend it on the other critical needs the animals in their care have.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Last year, National Feed a Rescue Pet Week took place in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.  But even then, organizers surpassed their goal by sending 2.4 million meals and 150,000 pounds of critical supplies such as bowls, leashes, and crates to shelters and rescue organizations!  This year they hope to even more with help from animal advocates and dog lovers nationwide.

If you want to take part and help in this extraordinary effort, just log on to GreaterGood.org’s website and click to donate.  Just $10 ships 200 meals to animals in need!  Additionally, or instead of providing a direct donation, you can contribute by shopping for adorable pet-lover merchandise through the Animal Rescue’s site.

You can also help feed animals in your local area by donating pet food to your local pet food pantry.  Donations to these sites can help keep dogs from becoming homeless in the first place!
