What To Do If Your Dog Bites A Person

So the unthinkable happens. Sweet little (insert dog name) loses their bone for a second and ends up biting somebody before you can stop them. Argh! Now what?! Don’t worry, I will talk you through it.

Ok, first things first, you get that second cousin of yours on the phone. You tell them to make an extra bed for you. You get home, close the blinds, and take care to delete all WhatsApp messages –they can trace you by seeing when you were last online…and of course your location. Then you pack your dog’s favorite toy and your pillow, jump into the car, pump the music up to MAX and wonder to yourself “what is life?!”

Ok time to be serious. Straight away, make sure your dog is nowhere near enough for them to attack again. Whatever has set them off may still be present so distance at this time can make all the difference.

Do what you can to provide medical help. You most likely can’t go near the person because of your dog and to be honest; you and your beloved pet (that he/she has probably called some choice names by now) are the last thing they want to see. Call for help if nobody is around and if necessary call an ambulance. Remember all it takes is a little nick to an artery for a person to bleed out in minutes. You have the femoral artery in your thigh (thanks for the info Grey’s Anatomy) that a dog can easily get to.

Most likely the police will be involved but if not and no medical help is needed, this is a time to swap contact information. We live in a world of CCTV now, don’t think you can flee the place with your dog and get away with it. No matter what you think, you’d be pretty easy to pick out on camera footage. This is also a way to get in contact with the person later on to see if they are OK, who knows it may even be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Can you imagine the story at a party?

You: *looks lovingly at partner* well my dog tried to savagely maul him/her. And as our eyes met, I could see the anger. But behind it was… more anger. But behind THAT was so much love and care. It was meant to be. That scar on his/her leg is a symbol of our love…and private healthcare.
