Why Dogs Make Great Companions

Are you more of a dog person or a cat person? Have you ever wondered why so many people love dogs? When people say how smart dogs are, it’s no joke. According to Live Science, an average dog has an IQ of a two-year-old child.

These findings stem from a language development test, which showed that an average dog has the ability to learn up to 165 words, as well as gestures and signals. Some dogs can even beat that and learn up to 250 words! Because dogs are so smart, they make for the ideal pet. The following are reasons why dogs make great companions.

A Dog’s Mission Is To Please Its Owner. Of course, it depends on the breed of a dog, but dogs typically enjoy pleasing their owner. By having a dog who is eager to please their owner, they are easier to train. The top breeds that strive to make their owner happy are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds. Standard Poodles, Papillons, Border Collies, Belgian Malinois’, Shetland Sheepdogs, and Belgian Tervurens.

Dogs Cuddle Best. Your furry, four-legged, pet will cuddle better than anyone. Depending on your dog’s personality, they may want to curl right up on your lap. Better yet, when you’re in bed, they may try to cuddle right up to you.

They Are Extremely Protective. Most dogs will protect their human, no matter what. They are protective creatures and if someone tries to hurt you, they will step in and do their best to protect you.

“…they will step in and do their best to protect you.”

Dogs Can Sense When You’re Sick. Particular breeds of dogs have nearly 40-50 scent receptors more than humans, which makes their smell approximately 100,000 times stronger. Service dogs use this all the time: When a person is sick, the body chemistry will change; a dog’s sensitive nose will detect changes and gives them time to notify their owner that they may be getting sick.

They Have a Sixth Sense: Compassion. When a dog’s owner is upset, they will try to do what they can to make them feel better. Although a dog can’t respond to their owner verbally, they can surely make them feel better by sticking around and cuddling when they know something isn’t quite right. A dog is very understanding, even without speaking words.

Dogs Are Excited To See Their Owner Walk Through The Door. Most dog owners’ favorite part of the day is walking through their door, knowing their furry companion is anxiously waiting for their arrival. Dogs act as if their owner left them for a week and are just returning. Between their tail wagging 30 mph and their constant urging for belly rubs, they signal how much they missed their owner.

Dogs may be harder to take care of than other pets, but the reward is worth it. Between dogs sensing when you’re sick, cuddling with you, and being loyal and protective – it’s safe to say dogs make great companions and are a great addition to a family.
