Halloween isn’t just for humans – it’s the perfect time to get creative with costumes for your furry family member too!
Whether your dog loves the attention of being dressed up or you’d rather keep it simple, there’s a fun costume idea for every size pup out there.
For the Small but Mighty (Under 30 pounds)
If your dog is on the smaller side, why not go for something as cute as their personality? A taco costume is a crowd-pleaser and adorable on a pint-sized pup. With a bit of felt in green, yellow, and red, you can craft your dog into the perfect snack with just a few easy steps. Add some pom-poms for “toppings” and watch your dog become a walking fiesta! Or, for the more magical pup, transform them into a baby dragon! Using lightweight foam for wings and a little glitter for some sparkle, they’ll be breathing fire (well, cuteness) all night long!
Medium Dogs (30-60 pounds)
Your medium-sized dog is the perfect candidate for costumes that make a statement. Turn them into a lion, complete with a mane made from orange yarn or faux fur! It’s a majestic look that adds just a touch of whimsy, and bonus – it will keep them warm if it’s a chilly night out. If you’re into a laugh-out-loud option, how about a pirate? Strap on a tiny hat, add a bandana, and voila – you’ve got a four-legged Jack Sparrow. If you really want to lean into the fun, create a sushi dog. A little green fabric for seaweed, a pillow for rice, and some orange felt for a salmon topper will make your dog the cutest sushi roll anyone’s ever seen.

For the Big Dogs (60+ pounds)
Got a big dog with an even bigger personality? They’re the perfect canvas for some show-stopping costumes! For a funny and functional costume, consider dressing them as Superdog. A simple cape tied loosely around their neck with a large felt “S” on their back makes them feel like the hero they are. Or, if your dog has the build for it, try a cow costume! With a little black-and-white felt and some soft, stuffed horns, they’ll have everyone mooing with laughter.
For Dogs Who Prefer to Stay Costume-Free
Not every dog is a fan of wearing costumes, and that’s totally fine! You can still get them in the Halloween spirit without dressing them up. Try decorating their leash with festive ribbons, or add some fun, safe options like LED collar lights or reflective leash wraps. LED lights clip onto their collar in bright, Halloween-themed colors like orange or green, while reflective wraps keep them visible in the dark. A cute Halloween-print bandana is another simple way to give them a festive touch without the fuss. Your pup will be both stylish and comfortable while staying in the spooky spirit!
Keep the Candy Away from Fido!
As much as your dog might beg with those puppy eyes, it’s important to remember that Halloween candy is not safe for them. Chocolate can be especially harmful or even toxic to dogs. Make sure to keep candy bowls, wrappers, and any stray sweets far out of reach from curious noses. Instead, treat them to a special dog-friendly snack, so they don’t feel left out during the festivities!
Happy Howl-o-ween to you and your furry friend!
