How to Keep Your Dog Comfortable During the 4th of July

The 4th of July is fun for us humans; but it can be a nightmare for our furry friends. Here are some tips to keep your pooch safe and comfy.

Bring Them Inside. More pets run away on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year. The first step to keeping your dog comfortable is to bring them inside. This will also keep them cool, isolating them from the summer heat, and away from loud people and fireworks that can be upsetting for their sensitive ears.

Create a Quiet Space. The loud, unpredictable pop of fireworks can wreak havoc on our four-legged friends. If you are staying home, snuggle your pup and reassure them that it’s OK. Keep them close to you and, if your pup likes them, give them treats to chew on to help with anxiety.

If you’re heading out, find a quiet space in your home they can stay. A small bathroom or room at the back of your living space, in kennel or out, can be a sanctuary for sensitive dogs. Make sure to leave ample food and water as well, so that they are comfortable and well-taken of. Just make sure to keep all doors and windows closed, as animals may try to escape when frightened.

White Noise. If you plan on staying home, continue your routine as usual. Watch TV, listen to music, or let the kids play, as these normal “home” noises can help ease your dog’s discomfort.

If you plan on going out, a constant stream of white noise can help lessen the impact the loud booms have on your pup. If you’ve got your dog in a small bathroom, turn on the fan to create a calming, constant sound. If they’re in a room, turning on the TV or radio can give your pooch a feeling of security.

Keep It Dark. Close all curtains, windows and window coverings. This not only helps drown out the noise, but can lessen the impact of light flashes for photosensitive animals.

Once you’ve got your pup settled, make sure they have their collars and tags on. Anything can happen, and you want to make sure your pooch can be found if they get out!

By following these simple steps, you can keep your friend taken care of during this hectic holiday. Remember, our animal friends are much more sensitive to light and sound than we are, so taking these proper steps are hugely beneficial to their well-being.
