Pet-Friendly Spring Cleaning Products

April 14, 2021 | We Learn | Administrator

Finally, spring is here!  Many of us are excited to open windows and air out our homes after a long winter.  Spring is also the time when people look to do a deep clean… ridding every nook and cranny of the dust, dirt, and of course, dog hair, that has built up over months of indoor living.

Unfortunately, many traditional cleaning products can make your pet sick.  Ingredients in disinfectants can be toxic and even fatal if ingested by your dog.  Chemicals like chlorine, alcohol, bleach, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and any compound that contains “phenol” in its description could be dangerous.  Even products that are marketed to clean up pet stains and messes can contain deadly ingredients!

So what products are actually safe for your pet?

HOMEMADE GOODS

A good go-to is time-tested and affordable… vinegar.  Straight from the bottle or diluted with water, vinegar is non-toxic and can clean almost every hard surface in your home safely.  With just a spray bottle, rag, or mop, your floors will shine!  You can also combine it with baking soda and lemon to make an all-natural scrub for more stubborn stains and spots.

Unfortunately, many traditional cleaning products can make your pet sick.

STORE BOUGHT, PET-SAFE

But, if you are looking to buy a commercial product, you are in luck.  The pet-friendly cleaning product market is on the rise, and there are many options available to consumers.  While not all products are perfect, here are some of the better ones to consider when you shop:

HARD FLOOR SURFACES

Method’s Squirt + Mop Hard Floor Cleaner is made with non-toxic, plant-based ingredients.  It can be sprayed directly on the floor and then mopped up.  The cleaner does not irritate a dog’s paws and is safe if ingested.  The Method brand is also certified cruelty-free and never tested on animals, so that is a bonus as well!

CARPETS

Carried by major pet stores like PetSmart, Nature’s Miracle Carpet Shampoo is odor-free and made with a bio-enzymatic formula that prevents odors from getting stuck in carpet fibers.  It is also low-sudsing and can be used with nearly any water-based carpet or steam-cleaning machine.

GLASS, STAINLESS STEEL, AND CHROME

SpotAway makes a pet-friendly glass cleaner that contains no harmful chemicals like ammonia or bleach. It is also biodegradable and can be bought in a concentrate which makes it an economical way to clean all year long.

Finally, if you are in the market for a new vacuum cleaner or steam mop this spring, be sure to check out Bissell’s pet-friendly line of products.  We love Bissell’s Pet Focus program because they have partnered with animal welfare organizations all across the country to help reduce the number of animals in shelters through pet adoptions, spay and neuter programs, and microchipping.  Since 2016, Bissell has helped place more than 49,000 homeless animals in their forever home.  That is something to seriously celebrate while you clean!
