Dog Manners: Tips for Owners and Their Pups When in Public Spaces

October 4, 2018 | We Learn | Tips from Lucy Tate
For many dog owners, going out in public with their pooch is inevitable. They take their pups to restaurants and on trips, allowing them to be a part of the family every day. In many cases, these dogs become comfortable enough with their excursions to get socialized, meaning they can easily handle being around people and other dogs. Some pets, however, need a little training before they’re ready to hang out in public spaces, both for their comfort and everyone’s safety.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help your dog prepare for being in a public area, from walking him often to training him well. Participating in new activities is a great way to start, but you’ll want to limit your pet’s time with these in the beginning. It’s also important to remember his comfort level when you’re out and come prepared with food, snacks, and water.

Keep reading for some great tips on how to help your dog mind his manners in public.

Burn Energy. Help your pup burn off extra energy before going out by taking him to the park or just playing with him in the backyard for a bit. This will ensure that once you get to where you’re going, you won’t have to worry about him being too excitable while you’re trying to focus on having a good time. Make sure he takes a potty break just before you leave, as well. It’s a good idea to look for the best leash for your dog, as fit and comfort are important for walk safety.

Come Prepared. No matter where you take your pup, make sure you’re prepared with food, treats, water, and travel bowls, as well as cleanup tools for his bathroom needs. This will give you peace of mind that he’s well taken care of no matter where you are or how long you’ll be there, and it will keep him occupied and happy at the same time. Give Him Plenty of Attention. Even the most well-behaved dogs will sometimes act out when they feel they need a little attention, and this is never truer than when you’re trying to enjoy yourself or when you’re in the company of others. To prevent your dog from jumping up on people, making a mess, or barking, give him plenty of attention both before you leave your house and while you’re out. Unless he’s very tired, chances are he won’t be satisfied with laying down quietly when there are a lot of people around.

Train Him Well. Some public spaces are easier to infiltrate with a pet than others. In a large, noisy setting — such as an outdoor concert — you’ll want to make sure your dog is familiar and comfortable with commands such as “down,” “come,” and “stay.” Keeping him on a leash is a must, of course, but for his safety and the safety of everyone around him, it’s best to train him well before exposing him to large crowds. Socialize Him Slowly. Some dogs become accustomed to being around other animals and people pretty quickly; others take a little longer. That’s okay! Try to stay patient during the process and take things slowly. Expose your pup to new experiences a little bit at a time, allowing him to spend time with others for 10 or 15 minutes in the beginning before moving on.
